Zero Hunger

Zaynab and Sokmeng were leading the ACD (Active Citizenship Day) today and they chose to focus on Sustainable Development Goal 2 - Zero Hunger.

We started with some group exercises about the reasons why there is hunger in the world - conflict, climate change, poverty, pests, etc.

Goal 2 is about ending hunger and malnutrition, ensuring people have reliable, sustainable access to food, improving agriculture and maintaining genetic diversity in crops.

Here are some statistics from a matching exercise we did at the beginning:

The goal also aims to improve the productivity of small scale agriculture - putting first those that are furthest behind, to boost the economy from the bottom up.

After learning some more about the goals and the ways that we can solve them, we split into groups again and were assigned different areas to study, and then present back after about 15-20 minutes.

This is the poster that my group and I made about Africa:

We had to include how hunger is an issue in the area and why, how the goal is being met, and how solving Zero Hunger will help solve other SDGs.

Some of the statistics are quite shocking.

After the ACD, we had a session in the afternoon. On Fridays we have a session in the office and it's been consistently one of the hardest - very low numbers but also the few that come don't come every week, which makes continuity with teaching concepts challenging.

This, among other things, meant that by the end of the work day I was feeling a bit down and frustrated.
I'm very grateful for team members that will purposely cheer me up, and a host family that makes me forget about all my issues. Going home at the end of the work day is one of the best parts for me - playing with my little brother or getting to hold the baby for a bit.
I also got to speak to Zoƫ (my cousin) for a few hours which was so nice. Just to be able to talk more fully about what's been going on and think about other things as well.

I know a few people have been wondering how my health is. I think I'm one of the few doing quite well in that respect. Beyond that night when I think I had food poisoning, I have been completely fine. Some of the team are being eaten alive by mosquitos, some have had much longer stomach bugs or more continuous issues with the food (even the Khmer), and one girl got diagnosed with typhoid recently, so I feel pretty fortunate. Thanks to everyone who is praying for me. I'm very grateful.
